Light Diffusion

Building:  Memorial Union
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:52pm
Composition:  Looking up at the skylight.  A screen is used to diffuse the light coming into the space.  I like the layers created by the support for the cloth diffusers and mullions for the skylight.
Process:  None

What Are You Doing Stairs!?

Building:  Sweeney Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:24pm
Composition:  I came upon this staircase and took a double take.  I assume there use to be a trapdoor to the attic or roof but was sealed up after the latest renovation to Sweeney Hall.  From the looks of it, the architect ran out of money and couldn't take out the extra staircase.
Process:  Cropped the photo to focus on the verticality of the staircase.
Meta Data:  18mm     f/3.5     SS: 1/15s     ISO: 1000

Mountain Uses

Building:  7 Oaks Recreation
Location:  Boone, IA
Time:  2:16pm
Composition:  Standing at the top of the hill.  Here, multiple activities are occurring. On the left, a ski lift is bringing skiers and snowboarders to the top, in the center, a class is being taught how to see.  On the right, a snowboarder captures the scene on his phone, similar to me.
Process:  None

Pendant

Building:  Sweeney Hall

Well Shaded Building

Building:  Iowa Energy Resource Center
Location:  Ankeny, IA
Time:  4:52pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the center column.  I wanted to show the repeating pattern in the facade.  This is a south facing facade so it is interesting to see how well shaded the face of the building is in the afternoon.
Process:  Fixed verticals and did a small amount of cropping so that the center column was in the center of the image
Meta Data:  32mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/125s     ISO: 100

Courtyard Gate

Building:  Logomarcino Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:48 pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the entrance to the back portion of the courtyard.  I took this photo 20 times trying different combinations of the gate being opened/closed.  I chose this photo because A) the gate blocked out some of the washed out background B) I liked the weathered look of the gate C) Looking through the gate is much more interesting than looking through open space.
Process:  Tried to darken the background but wasn't too successful.  Upped the contrast in the foreground bricks to bring out their detail.
Meta Data:  36mm     f/11     SS: 1/40s     ISO: 100

Abandoned Courtyard

Building:  Gilman Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:14 pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the entrance to the courtyard.  The vines and dead trees give the feeling of abandonment in my opinion.  I cropped the photo a little on the edges to give the photograph a more claustrophobic feel.
Process:  Used a combination of Photoshop tools to bring out the texture and detail in the concrete.  (Burn and dodge, Contrast, Saturation).  Image is white balanced to the snow.
Meta Data:  36mm     f/11     SS: 1/40s     ISO: 100

Blue Structure

Building:  Meats Laboratory
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:16pm
Composition:  Looking directly upwards at the underside of a triangular structural member.  Because the image plane of the camera is perpendicular to the structure, the structure appears flat.  The only indication that the structure isn't flat is from the sun lighting on the structure
Process:  Bracketed the shot so that I could get color and detail in both the clouds and the structure,
Meta Data:  18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/50s     ISO: 18mm

Two Windows

Building: 223 Welch Ave.  (Location of Golden Wok)
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:21pm
Composition: The two windows are the reflecting the trees in the background. The photo was taken at a time when the lighting on the interior and exterior is about the same allowing one to see partially inside while still getting the reflections from the windows.
Process:  Cropped the image so that the windows were centered in the photograph.
Meta Data:  55mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/50s     ISO: 600

Cat Walk

Building:  Kildee Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:34pm
Composition:  Standing in the center of the cat walk so that I am on axis with the center point of the truss above the walk way.  The entry point for the cat walk on the right helps to keep the eye in the photograph.  The window at the end of the cat walk draws your eye in because it essentially goes on forever.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/10s     ISO: 100

Clock Tower

Building:  Intersection of Welch and Chamberlain Street
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:30pm
Composition:  Standing in the center of the street, on axis with the clock tower.  The clock tower is to Campus Town as the Campanile is to Central Campus.  The clock tower is at the top of a hill, making it taller than most buildings in the area, allowing people from all around to know the time and to act as a landmark when navigating the streets.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  24mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/500s     ISO: 800

Building:  Grand Central Station

Side Entry

Building:  Seagram Building
Location: Uptown, New York City
Time:  12:37pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the side entry to the building.  I decided not to fix the verticals of the supports for the awning to make it appear to be longer and larger than it actually is.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  18mm     f/4     1/60s     ISO: 800

Let there be Light!

Building:  Morimoto
Location:  Downtown New York City
Time:  7:18pm
Composition:  This is the view from my table.  The light wall at the bottom of the image divides the restaurant in half.  The curved surface on the ceiling is a precast material that has lights embedded into it and additional lights shining up into it.
Critique:  The restaurant was very dark, meaning I had to use a high ISO which resulted in some noise
Process:  Used noise filters and sharpen filters to reduce the amount of noise from using the high ISO.
Meta Data  18mm     f/3.5     SS: 1/30s     ISO: 2800

Connection Detail

Building:  Statten Island Ferry Pavilion
Location:  Battery Park, New York City
Time:  3:17pm
Composition:  Looking up at a connection detail that holds two parts of the pavilion together.  The connection also allows for natural light and indirect light to illuminate the interior
Process:  None

Brick Gradiant

Building:  Howe Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  12:29pm
Composition:  Because of the construction and crane at the Biorenewable building next door, I used a vertical composition so nothing unneeded was in the photo.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  46mm     f/11     SS: 1/160s     ISO: 100

Illuminated Facade

Building:  Hoover Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:15pm
Composition:  Standing at the corner of the building allowed me to capture two sides of the building.  Because of the suns location, one side is completely illuminated and the other is mostly illuminated by indirect light.
Critique:  The illuminated side of the building is a little washed out.
Process:  None

Carom

Building:  Carom Sculpture

Process:  None

Stone and Brick

Building:  Pearson Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  11:30am
Composition:  Standing on axis with a secondary entrance to the building.
Critique:  Taking this photo either earlier or later in the day would have brought out a lot of detail in the stone section of the facade.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  24mm     f/11     SS: 1/200s     ISO: 100
