Road Trip

Building:  Highway 80 East
Location:  Iowa
Time:  3:30-6pm
Composition:  I set my camera on the dashboard of the car and had it take a photo every 3 seconds.  It starts out a little jumpy, as the car was vibrating and the car dashboard is sloped.  While this photo isnt of architecture per say, it does capture a small glimpse of the Iowa infrastructure and landscape.  Take note of the stupid blue Dodge car that drove on the left hand side of the road and drove under the speed limit for 3/4 of the drive.
Process:  Combined photos approximately 3000 photos together at 10fps to create the video

Guard Rail

Building:  Union Drive Bridge
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  10:58am
Composition:  On the right, I used the column as a start/termination point for the railing.  This also acts as a way to guide one's eye toward the center of the photograph.
Process:  None

Electrical Connections

Building:  ISU Power Station
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:20pm
Composition:  Because of a fence, I took the photo from far away.  As a result the structure appears more compact than it really is.
Process:  The photo was taken in black and white for two reasons: 1) It allowed me to maximize the contrast between the structure and the clouds. 2) Power stations are an industrial construction, so I though the black and white photograph, which is also an industrialized process, would work together.

Simple Chandelier

Building:  Durham Center
Location:  Ames, IA
Time: 4:48pm
Composition:  Standing directely underneath the chandelier.  What caught my attention was how parts of the chandelier that are hanging match up with the support structure for the chandelier.
Process:  I took this photograph in black and white to maximize the contrast between the chandelier and the ceiling.  The balls on the chandelier are a similar shade of yellow as the ceiling and they blended together in a color photograph.

Expressed Connection

Building:  Durham Center
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:47pm
Composition:  Every time a vertical and horizontal expression connect on the facade, a rough stone square is used to mark the intersection.
Process:  Because the subject is about 12' off the ground, I used Photoshop to fix the verticals and horizontals of the grout lines.

Post Sculpture

Building:  200 5th Ave SE (OPN Architects Office)
Location:  Cedar Rapids, IA
Time:  1:41pm
Composition: Standing on axis with the sculpture and the awning.  While the sculpture and the awning are unrelated, their colors and positions work together to draw attention towards the building.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  18mm     f/13     SS: 1/60s     ISO: 100

How Clouds are Made

Building:  Power Plant
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:09pm
Composition: I oriented myself, in relation to the smoke stack, so that it appeared that clouds were coming out of the stack.  To get this orientation, I stood relatively close to the building and looked up.  A distance shot or zoomed in shot would have been more difficult due to the number of clouds in the sky.

Mountain Lion

Building:  Landscape Memorial west of Morrill Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  3:44pm
Composition:   Using the rule of thirds, the lions head (foreground) is on the left third of the image.  The lions back leg (background) is on the right third of the image.
Process:  In Photoshop, I cropped the sculpture tight so that it would seem more dominating and larger in the photograph

Brick Pattern

Building:  Sweeny Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  12:39pm
Composition:  I cropped the image so that only the extruding brick pattern was visible.  This is an excellent example of how directly overhead sunlight can flatten an image.
Process:  None

Cable Railing

Building:  Former Mayor's House
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  5:45pm
Composition:  I wanted to capture the rusted cable vs the original cable in the rail system.  Something I liked after the photograph was taken was the light coming through cable holes from the left.

Stone Wall

Building:  Private Residence on 86th St
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  4:45
Composition:  The crop is at the edges of the stone railing to give the appearance that the stone extends beyond the boarders of the photograph.
Process:  I did an extreme crop in photoshop.

5682

Building:  5682 Residence
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  4:36pm
Composition:  I wanted to capture the run down look of the house by including a portion of the vine covered fence below the address.  The vines are wrapping around the entire facade.  Here the vines are beginning to cover up the address of the house.
Process:  None

Crossing Skylight

Building:  Urbandale High School
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  3:34pm
Composition:  To take this picture I had to hop on a row of lockers to get directly under the skylight.
Process:  There was a hat or glove in the light so I used the stamp tool to remove the shadow it caused.
Meta Data:  18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/80s     ISO: 100

Rotating 'U's

Building:  Urbandale Pavilion @ Corner of Douglas Ave and 70th
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  8:20am
Composition:  I stood on a ledge used to seperate the sidewalk from the street to get my the picture plane of my camera as close to parallel with the top of the sculpture as possible.  Doing this removed a lot of distortion.
Process: Fixed verticals in Photoshop.
Meta Data:  32mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/400s     ISO: 100

Mirrored Sides

Building:  Polk County River Place
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  9am
Composition:  Standing on axis with the skylight opening above the hallway.  The image is symmetrical to put emphasis on the skylight.  By taking a vertical image and a horizontal I was able to get more of the skylight in addition to the two exhaust fans adjacent to the hallway
Process:  This is a horizontal and vertical image stitched together in Photoshop.  After stitching the two images together, I had to use the stamp tool to fix a couple blank areas on the walls because the stitch could not cover them.

Mirror

Building:  Iowa Department of Transportation
Location:  Ankeny, IA
Time:  3:54pm
Composition:  Looking up at the building facade.  I positioned myself so that the sign and reflection of the sign would be visible in the image.  I also wanted to highlight the building material used in this portion of the facade.
Process:  None
Meta Data: 18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/500     ISO: 100

Performance

Building:  Music Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:59pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the performer and the organ.  The performer is more in focus in the start and stop points of the performance because that is where he stood still the longest.
Process:  I had the performer strap lights to his mallets so that as he moved the lights would create streaks of light that the slow exposure would capture.  In Photoshop, I combined many shots of the entire performance together to get a more or less flowing path of light across the instrument.

Angled Reflection

Building:  Agronomy Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  12:20pm
Composition:  My camera is angled 45 degrees from the ground so that it is perpendicular to the glass pane in the foreground.  By angling the camera, I was able to reflect part of the main building in the windows.
Process:  White balanced for snow
Meta Data:  18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/125s     ISO: 100

Oblique Louvers

Building:  Agronomy Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:20pm
Composition:  Standing perpendicular to the stairwell facade.  I cropped out a little of the sky because there was way to much sky compared to ground in the original image.
Process:  I had to take three photos and photo merge them together because there was an awning that prevented me from backing further away and my lens was not wide enough to capture the full height of the building.  As a result, I had to stretch and distort the merged image so that verticals were all straight and the building was properly proportional.

Agril Alter

Building:  Agril Alter @ Agronomy Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:40pm
Composition:  I oriented myself for this photograph so that the building was the backdrop to the sculpture so that there was a higher amount of contrast between the sculpture and the background.
Process:  None

Physics Statue

Building:  Physics Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:48 pm
Composition:  The statue is standing in a courtyard, completely surrounded by the building, preventing access.  By positioning the camera lens perpendicular to the curtain wall I was able to eliminate all glare created when photographing through the glass.
Process:  White Balanced for the snow

A melted path

Building:  Office and Laboratory Building
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  4:22pm
Composition:  Standing on a path that appears to be unaffected by the snow that had fallen just prior to the photo. The  photo is on axis with the blue door.
Process:  White balanced for the snow.
Meta Data:  22mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/400s     ISO: 100

Conference Room

Building:  Bio Renewables
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:28pm
Composition:  This has probably been one of the most awkward rooms to photograph in.  Nothing in the room is on axis or centered.  I took the photo from the corner of the room so that the table took up a majority of the room.  The thing that bothers me the most is that the table is not centered on the window.
Process:  None

Perspective

Building:  Hixson Lied Student Success Center
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  6:22pm
Composition:  By standing off to the side, the wavy chair profile becomes visible.  Also by orienting to the side, the false perspective created by the converging walls is lessened but still present.  If I was on axis with the chair it would appear flat.  The center of the image is on the corner of the hallway in the background.

Empty "Social Space"

Building:  Gerdin Hall
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  11:54 am
Composition:  This is a space intended for students in Gerdin Hall to sit and relax at during class.  Unfortunately, the chairs are uncomfortable and low making the space hard to be comfortable in.  During a typical passing period, only a student or two uses the space and it is only for a moment.
Process:  None

Building of the Century

Building:  Stephens Auditorium
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  5:34pm
Composition: At sunset, the sun catches the curves of the building and creates a beautiful gradient on the underside of the roof.  The layers of staircases and walkways between me and the building orients the building in plan of other civil buildings.
Meta Data:  58mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/125s     ISO: 300

Sunset at Morrill

Buildings:  Morrill Hall and The Hub
