Amish Barn

Building:  Moh's Residence Barn

Umbrella

Building:  Nolan Plaza
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  5:25pm
Composition:  The sculpture sits on the corner and is large enough where it can be seen from anywhere on the block.  In the image, the low angle and proximity gives the appearance that the sculpture is larger than the surrounding buildings.
Process:  None
Meta Data:  18mm     f/5.6     SS: 1/640s     ISO: 100

Civic Center

Building:  Civic Center of Des Moines
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  5:33pm
Composition:  The building as seen from the corner.  The large entrance of the building exits to an empty public space.  What I really like about the image is how the man whole cover turns, what typically is a bland foreground, into a context shot that shows how the building is related to its surroundings.
Process:  None

Fire Station

Building:  Volunteer Fire Station
Location:  Mt. Vernon, IA
Time:  2:12pm
Composition:  Looking at the two primary facades of the building.  While bother sides receive sun, the south is shaded with a cantilever.  The angled wall of the west facade creates a false perspective view.
Process:  Removed a lot of leaves with the healing brush tool.  Additionally, I used the stamp tool to removed grass that was growing over the sidewalk.

Mechanical Sculpture

Building:  American Republic Insurance Courtyard
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  5:32pm
Composition:  Because the large copper is sculpture is reflected, I aligned the camera on the area where the sculpture breaks open, thus hiding the photographer and camera.
Process:   The original image was tilted toward the right so I fixed the horizontals in Photoshop.  Finally I used the dodge tool to bring a little of the reflected light out of the four metal strips that intersect at the base of the sculpture.

Light Gradation

Building:  American Republic Insurance Building
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  5:32pm
Composition:  The light coming through the doorway is reflecting upwards into the coffers.  As a result, the coffers directly above the doorway are more lit than the coffers further away.  The final result is each coffer is receiving a different amount of light resulting in a gradation of light inside the coffers as they get further from the doorway.
Process:  Fixed horizontals and Verticals in Photoshop.

Hanging Canoe

Building:  Chickery Residence
Location:  Ellston, IA
Time:  1:20PM
Composition:  Photo of the hanging canoe that will act as an interior light for the living room of the house.  Because my camera lens wasn't wide enough, I took the photo looking up.  The house is still under construction, so this view shows the least amount of clutter.
Process:  None

Textured Brick

Building:  AIM healthcare and Pharmacy
Location:  Cedar Rapids, IA
Time:  10:48am
Composition:  The textured brick catches the sun and creates shadows on the wall.  Depending on the angle of the sun, the shadows change creating a semi-dynamic surface for the building.
Process:  I cropped the photo on all 4 sides along the grout

Seating Arrangement

Building:  Papa John Center
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  5:48pm
Composition:  I stood on the balcony above the arrangement.  Each chair features a different type of lighting: diffused, direct, and shadowed.
Process:  Because I white balanced the photo for the table, I decided to slightly darken the table because the table was pure white and if printed, no ink would be used which would look odd.

Football Stars

Building:  Bergstrom Football Complex
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  12:03pm
Composition: The vertical louvers are painted so that they display a continuos image of the football players.  In the photograph, I am trying to capture the full image.  Unfortunately, the painted image is calibrated to be seen at about 12' off of the ground, so I was unable to capture the full effect of the paintings.
Process:  None

Greenhouse Shed

Building:  Plant Pathology Greenhouse
Location:  Ames, IA
Time:  11:51am
Composition:  Standing on axis with, what I assume to be vents for the greenhouse.
Process:  Took three different exposures of this image so that I could get the sky detail in the image.  Merged the three exposures using Photoshops HDR feature.

Home Sweet Home

Building:  Widlowksi Residence
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  3:23pm
Composition:  The stitching together of the image created a distortion that gives the appearance of a planet.  I stood in my backyard and took the image.  Because of the sloped surface that I was photographing on, the house is more distorted than the pool because the house was located up the hill while the pool was down the hill.
Process:  Combined 12 images to create a 360 degree panormic image.  I then used the polar coordinate distortion filter to create the final "planet view"

Cable Connections

Building: River Walk Pedestrian Bridge
Location:  Des Moines, IA
Time:  11:49am
Composition:  In the actual bridge, the cables are not perpendicular to the ground, but instead splay outwards allowing for a curved walkway.  In the photo, I tilted my camera so that it was parallel to the support cables.  Doing this accentuated the curve of the arc giving it the appearance that is is bending horizontally and vertically rather than just vertically.  I also focused my camera so that only the nearest cable connection is in focus.
Process:  I removed some vignetting that was apparent in the lower left and right corners
Meta Data:  92mm     f/4.5     SS: 1/1250s     ISO: 100

Recital Preparation

Building:  Urbandale High School Performing Arts Center
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  7:02pm
Composition:  In preparation for the show to begin, people are running around getting everything prepared.  While this photo is not taken on axis, it does capture a particular moment in preparation when a small group stop the hustle and bustle to socialize.  The relatively slow exposure time blurred the everyone who was running around.  The stationary people are relatively crisp and frozen.
Process:  None

Twirling Figure

Building:  Clive Hotel Sculpture
Location:  Clive, IA
Time:  3:34pm
Composition:  I really like the angle of this shot because it showed the rotating form of the sculpture and the red material contrasted nicely with the sky.  Unfortunately, this angle showed a lot a of cars in the background.  To remove the emphasis from the background, I manually focused my lens so that pm;y the sculpture in the foreground was focused and everything else was slightly blurred.
Process:  Rotated the image slightly in post production so that the cars were more leveled

Skate Park

Building:  Walker Johnson Skate Park
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  1:48pm
Composition:  Standing on axis with the center of the ramp.  Because I was photographing a skate park I wanted to use a photo of it being used as it shows a relationship between human scale and the building scale.
Process:  Added a motion blur to the skater to further accentuate the motion of him moving.

Pavilion Context

Building:  Lakeside Pavilion
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  5:30pm
Composition:  Standing from across the lake.  For the final image, I wanted to show how the pavilion sits in relation to the lake.  From this view, the twisting roof is very apparent.  Also, the staggered beams that make up the walls of the pavilion still allow views through the space.
Process:  None

Twisting Roof

Building:  Lakeside Pavilion
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  5:05pm
Composition:  Standing off to the side of the pavilion.  With this shot I wanted to capture the twisting roof of the structure.  I would have preferred to take the shot from the other side so that the grill wasn't ruining the symmetrical composition, but there is a porta-potty behind me that I did not want in the shot.
Process:  None

Lakeside Roof Detail

Building:  Lakeside Pavilion
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  5:03pm
Composition:  Looking up at the stabilizing joint for the polygal roof.  I like how the stabilizer is separated from the wood so that additional details can be seen.
Process:  None

Lakeside Grill

Building:  Lakeside Pavilion
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time: 5:04pm
Composition:  The grill site off to the side of the main pavilion.  Unlike typical park grills, the base is solid concrete and the grill is more like a frying pan than a grill.
Process:  I used the dodge tool to increase the contrast between the gradation of light on the grill.
Meta Data:  32mm     f/6.3     SS: 1/640s     ISO: 100

Column Detail

Building:  Lakeside Pavilion
Location:  Urbandale, IA
Time:  5:08pm
Composition:  A zoom-in on the connection of the wood to steel connection of the column.  I chose to use an image at an angle because the bolt that goes through the wood is in an awkward location and partially covers the gap between the two panels of wood.
Process:  None
